The inaugural Island Honda Comox Valley Junior Stage Race was a huge success.
42 young cycling enthusiasts from the Comox Valley, Vancouver Island and the Mainland as far away as Kelowna took part in the event.
After heavy downpours all day Friday the skies cleared Saturday morning and stayed that way for the entire weekend allowing for perfect conditions for all three events.
The Time Trial on Saturday morning was held on a quiet country road very close to the family home of World XC Relay Champion Geoff Kabush. The turn around for the U17 and U19 categories was right in front of the house of another member of the Canadian World Champion Relay team, Kiara Bisaro.
When this was pointed out to the kids they started breathing deeply of the fresh country air and drank lots of the water coming out of a nearby well. Time will tell if that will help them to become World Champions and Olympians in the future.
The racing was very competitive in all categories. The U19's saw half the B.C. Abitibi team on the start line. Racing in the U17's was fast and furious and it would not be a surprise if several of next year's B.C. Abitibi team members were to come out of that group of riders.
The younger categories saw more of a variety of competitors. Some at the age of ten or eleven already 'seasoned' racers and out to win while, to others, winning was not everything. After doing their best on the course, they crossed the finish line well after the front runners with big smiles on their faces.
Due to generous donations from Island Honda, NORCO Performance Bikes, Ryders Sunglasses, Blacks Cycle, GIANT, PowerBar and Cycling B.C. every rider went home with one or more nice prizes.
The "Pasta Feast" Saturday evening in Dove Creek Community Hall was enjoyed by everyone. The food was plenty and delicious and it was an excellent opportunity to mingle with other cyclists from across the province.
The Comox Valley Cycle Club is looking forward to holding this event even bigger and better next year and we hope that similar events can be organised across the province.
