CIBC Wood Gundy Investment Advisor Takes It To The Extreme In His Race for Miracles
Brian Culbert, an Investment Advisor with CIBC Wood Gundy considers himself a very lucky man. That's why he's taken it upon himself to launch a one-man crusade for helping children in need. Through extreme mountain biking races occurring in 2004, Brian has set off on his quest to raise money for the CIBC World Markets Children's Miracle Foundation.
Brian's story is somewhat unique, but shared in one way or another with millions of people around the world. Brian's four-year-old son, Matthew, was born with a serious skin disorder that hospitalized him at birth. The care he received at The Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids) in Toronto was exemplary and made the first few months of Matthew's life a bit easier for his family.
Watching Matthew grow up and deal with his purely physical affliction opened Brian's eyes. His son was merely a toddler and he had an easier time dealing with things than did Brian and his wife Denise. The admiration he has for his son, combined with his experiences at Sick Kids, culminated in Brian's decision early this year to give something back to his community.
Brian has already competed in two of three big races for this year: the Canadian Championships in Alberta where he finished 13th out of 49 racers, and the World Championships in Whistler, BC, where he beat out 11 other riders to take the bronze in his category. Brian's third and final race of the year is known in the mountain biking community as one of the most difficult endurance events in the world, La Ruta De Los Conquistadores, in Costa Rica and takes place in November.
