Alex Stieda and Davis Phinney Team-up Again to Fight Parkinsons
Alex Stieda and Davis Phinney, former teammates on the ground-breaking 7-Eleven team of the 1980s, have teamed up again to offer cyclists a once-in-a-lifetime package that will take them to the 2005 Vuelta and Road World Championships while also giving them a chance to raise funds for the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinsons Research.
Presented by The Alex Stieda Cycling Experience, riders will join the former yellow jersey holder in Spain from September 14-26, 2005, where they'll ride with Alex to watch the last four stages of the Vuelta. They'll also get a chance to conquer some of the most challenging climbs in the Basque region, including the dreaded "Angliru" which has been a deciding stage in recent Vueltas. From there, it's off to Madrid for three fabulous days which include staying with Team USA at their hotel, joining them for a group ride and then watching the World Road Cycling Championships.
For every meter of climbing a rider completes, they'll donate either $2 (Gold Level) or $5 (Platinum Level) to the Davis Phinney Foundation. With a projected 2000 meters of climbing, riders will be raising between $4,000 and $10,000 each. The cost for the trip is $5,750 USD.
The Davis Phinney Foundation is the realization of a dream for Davis, who at age 40 was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinsons and has now committed his life to raising funds for further research into the disease. Davis hopes to join the group, pending his health status and his schedule.
"Alex has always been one of my best teammates and continues to be a very good friend," said Davis. "Through our friendship and passion for cycling, we've put together a great way for cyclists to help find a cure for Parkinson's disease while also enjoying some of the most famous climbs in cycling history, as well as a grand tour and the World Championships. Alex's Spanish Cycling Experience is a bike rider's dream."
