The Canadian Olympic Committee has announced this year’s inductees into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame. Among them are Donovan Bailey, the ‘World’s Fastest Man’ at the 1996 Olympic Games, the Schmirler Curling Team that brought home gold from Nagano in 1998, cyclist Steve Bauer and diver Anne Montminy.

The Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame recognizes those who have served the cause of the Olympic Movement with distinction. Each of the recipients will be honoured at an induction ceremony at 6 p.m. at the Delta Regina in Saskatchewan on April 15.

Athlete inductees include:

• Donovan Bailey, Oakville, Ont., double gold medallist, Athletics (100 metres and 4X100-metre relay), at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta
• Steve Bauer, Beamsville, Ont., silver medallist, Cycling (road race) at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
• Anne Montminy, from Montreal, Que., currently residing in San Francisco, Calif., Diving silver and bronze medallist, (10m platform and 10m synchronized), at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney

Team inductee:

• Sandra Schmirler Curling Team, Regina, Sask., gold medallists in Nagano, 1998. Team members include the late Sandra Schmirler (1963 – 2000), Jan Betker, Joan McCusker, Marcia Gudereit and Atina Ford.

Coach inductee:

• Currie Chapman, Ottawa, Ont., member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, 1964 – 1969, and head coach of the Women’s Ski Team, 1980 – 1988.

Builder inductee:

• Dr. Thomas Fried, Toronto, Ont., member of the medical team for many Olympic and Pan American Games.

The Canadian Olympic Order is awarded by the COC to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Olympic Movement in Canada. This year’s inductee is Dr. Bruce Kidd, Dean of the faculty of physical education and health at the University of Toronto, who competed as part of the Athletics team in both the 5,000 metres and the 10,000 metres at the 1964 Olympic Games and has continued to contribute to sport in Canada as an advocate, administrator and academic.

During the induction ceremony, the COC will also present the 2004 IOC ‘Sporting and Media’ Trophy to two outstanding Canadian sport journalists, George Gross of Sun Media and Richard Garneau of SRC.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be the highlight of the COC’s annual Congress weekend, which will take place April 14-17 in Regina. Other activities will include meetings of the COC’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors, as well as elections for executive positions on the Board of Directors.

Sask Sport, a federation of provincial sport and service organizations, and the Canada Games Council will host a community event on the evening of April 16 as part of the festivities. The public will have the opportunity to participate in various sport expos and demonstrations meant to provide a hands-on Olympic experience for the whole family.

As part of the weekend, the COC is also offering three high performance sport development workshops for Congress delegates and members of the public. The first workshop, The Professionalization of Coaching, will focus on the need to professionalize coaching in Canada and the approach to hiring, retaining, and supporting coaches. The second workshop, Performance on Demand, will address the intense pressure of performing, be it in sport, arts or entertainment. Lastly, the third workshop, Athlete Talent Identification, Recruitment and Retention, will analyze how the sport system needs to support Canadian athletes in order to achieve higher performance results at Olympic Games.
