The Blizzard Bike Club's Spring Stage Race kicks off for its 20th edition, Sunday. Local riders will be doing a Stage #1 Cecil Lake road race to see who the initial leaders are going to be in each of the three categories.

The spring Stage race was first done back in 1986 to get a local team ready for the tough "Ras Tealteann' international stage race in Eire (Ireland). The 'Ras' was going to be covering 900 miles over twelve stages in nine days. The local race was also made for nine races in nine days.

Bill Scott out dueled Pat Ferris for that first win. All riders would agree that the first Spring Stage Race was a tough event.

The Blizzard Team of Jeff Wright, Bill Scott, Pat and Tim Ferris along with team manager Derek Carroll went on to come in the Ras Tealteann and came in 6th international team doing that 900 mile total distance at an average speed of 40 km/hr.

The Spring Stage race has continued, as it was a popular event. It was changed to seven stages over seven days from nine races with shorter stages. There has been an Under 19 category and Women's category added.

Stephen Ferris is the overwhelming favourite. Pat Ferris is the defending champion and has won this event 5 times. Bob Andrews is a three-time winner. Dave Damery has won it twice.

Barb Polehoykie is the Women's defending champ with four-time winner Lisa Verbisky challenging to get the trophy back.

The Under 19 will be wide open as last years winner Eric Lowry is now a senior man.

Events include two time trials, a Hillclimb, a 'Rocky Road Race' and three road races.
Race time in Cecil Lake is 2:00 pm with sign on at 1:45 pm. Last event is the April 21st Baldonnel time trial.


RWR/ Peak Series Long Course Challenge

The Results from the RWR/ Peak Series Long Course challenge can now be seen on the Ride with Rendall website. The long course challenge featured a relentless 39km course highlighted by rolling hills and a series of long climbs. Fraser Atkinson from Fresh Air Racing set the course record (1.08.43.6) for the men's field after a three way battle with Sean Wakefield from Ride with Rendall and the RWR mystery rider. Monilee Lloy from Fresh Air Racing posted the fastest time in the woman's field with a time of 1:20.46.7.
