"Shore 2 tha Core" Marathon Vancouver
The 2005 North Shore Credit Union World Mountain Bike Festival & Conference got underway today with the inaugural "Shore 2 tha Core" SISU BC Cup Marathon.
Victoria's Seamus McGrath conquered the grueling 45km mountain bike race in just over two hours and seventeen minutes (2:17:53) to take top honours.
North Vancouver's own Andreas Hestler finished in second, nearly six minutes behind (2:23:15), with Justin Mark of Nanaimo in third spot with a time of two hours and thirty-one minutes (2:31:45). 2004 Canadian National Pro Elite Mountain Bike Champion, Ricky Federeau finished fourth (2:34:41).
Lesley Clements was first among the women (3:13:48), with Ashleigh Miller (3:23:15) and Amanda Butler (3:23:42) second and third respectively.
Vancouver Canuck Trevor Linden was among the riders, and finished with a respectable time of 3:46:53.
Linden, who just returned from a round of NHL labour talks in New York at 3:00am was a surprise participant, given the race was an 9:00am start!
"It's good to get outdoors on the trails here and clear my mind", said the NHLPA President.
Linden called the race "a great total body workout", and plans to enter the next SISU BC Cup event, Test of Metal, in Squamish June 19th.
Meanwhile, the festival continues Monday, May 23rd with the North Shore Credit Union Enduro and Corporate Sustainability Challenge, presented by Keystone Environmental Ltd.
Competitors will race for 6 hours (10-4pm) on a 4km loop around Camp Brick at the top of Lillooet Road in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, formerly known as the Seymour Demonstration Forest.
