Two races have been completed in the 5 race selection series for the Canada Summer Games to be held in Regina August 6 13th.
Albion Hills was host to the first of two mountain bike races on Sunday May 15th. Adam Morka (Team Hardwood) and Catherine Vipond (Gearsracing.com) had the fastest times in their respective categories. The men's winning time was based on the 2 long laps of the course and the women's was based on one lap. Rounding out the top five for the men were Mark Batty (Gearsracing.com). Chris Thorpe (Bay Cycle/3 Rox Racing), Kyle Douglas (Bay Cycle/3 Rox Racing) and Andrew Wilson (Bay Cycle/3 Rox Racing). Women's second and third place went to Kelly Bietola (Bay Cycle/3 Rox Racing) and Sarah Coney (Bay Cycle/3 Rox Racing). Kaitlyn Michener (Arrow Racing) and Krystal Jeffs (McMaster Cycling Club) were 4th and 5th. As all riders attending the Canada Games must compete on both the road and mountain bike, a few roadies turned up to test their skills. The next mountain bike selection race will be at Hardwood Hills on June 5th.
This past weekend, May 22nd, the very selective Effingham Stage of the Niagara Classic was the first of two tests in the road selection. Brandon Crichton (Italpasta/Transport Belimire) was the clear winner in the men's race and Krystal Jeffs (McMaster Cycling Club) finished 1st in the women's. Completing the top five for the men were Ian Manning (Bikesports - Pfaff Rt), Mark Hinnen (La Bicicletta - J Lindeberg), Dale Beaton (Bike Race Ottawa) and Thomas Foster (Mississauga Bicycle Racing Club). On the womens' side, Anna Tratnyek (Mississauga Bicycle Racing Club) and Kelly Bietola (Bay Cycle/3 Rox Racing) finished 2nd and 3rd. The KW Classic will host the second road race on June 12th.
The next stop in the selection series will be the all important Time Trial, being hosted by the Peterborough Cycling Club on June 1st. All pertinent information can be found on their website peterboroughcc.com. There will be no race day registration so ensure that you follow the instructions on the website for pre-registration. This time trial will be considered a vital component of selection for the CSG team. NOTE - any junior men wishing to make the Abitibi Team will need to compete at this event.
