7 New World Records by Canadian Duo

Between July 22 and July 31 a total of 7 human powered vehicle world records were broken by Sam Whittingham and Paul Buttemer of Team Varna, at the PMG Technologies testing facility in Montreal. These include achieving 79.14 km for 1 hour and 100.06 kph for 200m. Sam Whittingham, from Victoria, British Columbia, piloting Varna Mephisto, set these as well as new benchmarks for the 500m, one kilometer, and the one mile. Paul Buttemer of Comox, British Columbia broke the10 km and 100 km records in Varna Orpheus. Both vehicles were designed and built by George Georgiev, a world-renowned Human Powered Vehicle designer, of Gabriola Island, British Columbia.

Four records (1 hour, 500m, 100km, and 10km) were fast enough to surpass both high and low altitude marks, even though the PMG track is a mere 60 metres above sea level and the high altitude boundary is 700 metres.
One of Team Varna‚s greatest achievements was the breaking of the much-coveted one-hour record. The old one-hour distance record of 78.04 km was surpassed by Whittingham on the evening of July 31, raising it to 79.136 km (49.17 miles). This record has been hotly contested over the last few years, changing hands several times.

Whittingham also raised the stakes on another big human-power record, the low-altitude 200 m sprint. Sam beat this record twice in Varna Mephisto, before arriving at a final top speed of 100.06 kph (62.17 mph), smashing the 15 year-old low-altitude record of 95.11 kph set by Carl Sunquist in Moby by almost 5 kph!

Paul Buttemer, riding Varna Orpheus, set a new endurance record by riding 100km in 1:19:04. This beats the old record of 1:24:01 by nearly 5 minutes! Both the high and low altitude 500m record speeds were raised by Whittingham to 99.17 kph (61.63 mph) from 97.29 kph and 91.63 kph respectively. The old 10 km record of 8 :42.95 was annihilated by Buttemer, setting a new standard of 7:53.02. This average speed of 76.11 kph (47.3 MPH) is good for both high and low altitude records. New low-altitude record speeds of 96.44 kph (59.928 mph) for a distance of 1 km and 95.02 kph (59.06 mph) for 1 mile were also set by Whittingham, beating the old marks of 95.11 kph and 87.08 kph.

During Team Varna‚s two-weeks in Blainville, much of the their time was spent waiting for the ideal environmental conditions to make the record attempts. Hot weather, low humidity, low air pressure, and most importantly low wind levels are necessary ingredients for a successful run. Needless to say, these "windows" of opportunity were few and far between. Consequently, 80% of the runs were made in the evening, when the wind was low.

The PMG Technologies test track is a paved, almost-level, oval track with no banking. It is slightly more than 6km around and located just outside of Montreal in the town of Blainville. The average elevation of the track is 60 meters. An official surveyor measured the track and all distances. All of the records were witnessed by at least two International Human Powered Vehicle Association officials and were properly recorded.
