UCI Announces Worlds Rosters

The UCI announced on Monday the quotas for the elite men's road race at the world championships in Madrid next month. The national quotas were determined by ProTour or Continental Tour ranking. Canada, which had only one spot as of August 11th, moved up to 3 places after points from the national road championships were included in the rankings. Countries will be able to nominate 14, 9, 5 or 1 rider(s), of which 9, 6, 3 or 1 will be allowed to start.

Atlantic Open Track Championships

This weekend (August 19-20), the best track cyclists from Eastern Canada will participate in the 4th Atlantic Open Track Championships. Competitions will be held at the Caisse populaire Dieppe Velodrome on Friday evening and Saturday.

Riders will compete in a variety of events, just as attractive from one to the other. Among those events, we will find endurance pack events (points race, scratch race, elimination race), individual events (pursuit, kilo), and sprint events (match sprints, keirin, Olympic sprint). "Track is very spectator friendly and every event are very fun to watch" says National Cycling Centre president Guy Vincent.

At the end of the weekend, points will be cumulated to crown the champions.

Since its construction in 2001, the Caisse populaire Dieppe Velodrome has helped many cyclists making it to the next level. " People may not realize it, but it's a great work tool for our athletes and we are now starting to collect medals on a regular basis at the national level" adds Luc Arseneau, Head coach of the national cycling Centre.

Admittance is free for spectators throughout the weekend.

Tour For Kids Tours Southern Ontario

While the price of gas hit a buck a liter over the weekend, 250 hard core cyclists gathered at Nathan Phillips Square last Thursday (August 11) to hit the road and raise more than $500,000 for children's cancer camp all over Southern Ontario.

This was the 2nd Annual Tour For Kids presented by the Investor's Group and it brought out all the big stars of cycling.

Steve Bauer, Lisa Bently and Curt Harnett and a peleton of fund raisers where given a presidential police escort through the downtown core and out into the glorious countryside heading for Markdale on the first leg of the Tour for Kids 825 km 4-day odyssey to improve the lives of children with cancer.

"It was a real privilege to ride with such a dedicated group of riders raising funds for a great charitable cause," said Bauer who donated one free guided tour package trip to the Tour de France next year to the highest fund raiser.

"I could easily see the work and effort volunteered by the organizing committee. It was very impressive. Well done Tour for Kids."

Paul Devries, CEO of the Energy Savings Group and Team R.A.C.E. sponsor, matched Bauer's donation with a second free Bauer Tours trip for the rider who brought in the highest number of paid pledges.

Marshalling such a huge peleton over the hills and dales of Ontario was the responsibility of Team R.A.C.E. (Ride Against Cancer Everywhere) members and Gears Bike store employees. It was the marshal's job to escort the pack and organize into manageable groups of 20 to 30 to ensure safety for all riders and not impede traffic flow.

"What amazed me, was that most of the riders were fund raisers first, who turned themselves inside out to complete the longest distance on day 2 of 250 kilometres from Markdale to Minden," James Layfield said,

"For many, 100 km was the longest distance they had ever ridden, until this Tour For Kids. Everybody dug deep into their physical and financial reserves to make this event a huge success," Boomerang Group organizer Scott Graham said.

While the riders completed the average daily distance of 200 km plus, escorted by St. John's Ambulance, the riders' luggage, tents and food was delivered by ATS Transport to the final days' destinations in Markdale (day 1) Minden (day 2) Wellington (day 3) Canada's Paramount Wonderland (day 4).

Every aspect of this event was seamless, from marshalling, to rest stops every 50 kms, to huge amounts of food and beverages donated by Marsan Foods, to busing by Stock Transportation and even the welcoming committee at the end of each day.

The riders/fund raisers were treated like heroes everyday of this tour, but it was the generous support of all the suppliers and organizers who were the real heroes to this event.

On day four, Super Sunday, the marshal's regrouped the "fastest, faster, and fast" groups of riders into one huge peleton of riders once again so that all might share in the glory of arriving at Canada's Wonderland together.

To cap off a sensational four day event the Bare Naked Ladies flew in from all over North America to honor their commitment to give a private concert to all the fund raisers, cancer campers and organizers at the Kingsway Theatre.

The riders forgot all about their sore aching muscles, when the Ladies enchanted the audience with a personal performance that touched one and all to the core.

The audience responded with an enthusiastic pledge to raise "ONE MILLION DOLLARS" at next year's Tour For Kids.
