New Brunswick Cyclist Killed

The New Brunswick cycling community is mourning the loss of Dr. Duncan Hadley in a cycling accident on the TransCanada Highway on Sunday August 23. Dr. Hadley, as well as being a universally loved physician and family man, was an enthusistic participant in many outdoor sports as well as being a succesful masters rider in the Velo NB NBTel Mountain Bike series. Following is an excerpt from the Fredericton Daily Gleaner of Monday August 24, 1998:

Accident Kills Local Man

Dr. Duncan James Hadley was riding his bicycle on the Trans-Canada Highway about a kilometre east of Harvey's Big Potato at around 8 a.m. when he was struck by a motorcycle travelling in the same direction. The 49-year-old died on arrival at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital.

Hadley is survived by his wife, Dr. Susan Smith, and three daughters, Kate, Jenny and Maggie. He was a Fredericton native who graduated from FHS, UNB and Dalhousie Medical School. In 1978 Hadley began his career as a family practitioner at the Nashwaaksis Medical Clinic. He was a faculty member with the Dalhousie University family practice teaching unit in Fredericton.

'Dr. Hadley was a man of exemplary self-discipline who loved his wife and children and attended to his patients with compassion and excellence,'' said Dr. Tom Barry, a close colleague and president of the New Brunswick Medical Society.

'He was respected by his colleagues for his clinical skills and kind manner. Duncan will be sadly missed by not only his family, friends and patients, but also by the medical profession, which held him in such high esteem,'' Barry said. (The Daily Gleaner)
