An all-time record of more than 150 riders will converge on Hardwood Hills, Ontario, this Saturday, November 5, for the cyclo-cross national championships. Ten official national champion titles will be awarded in various categories; national team positions are also at stake for the 2006 cyclocross world championship in Zeddam, Netherland on January 28-29.

Elite Men
Unless he makes a last-minute appearance, current champion Geoff Kabush (British Columbia; Maxxis) will not defend his title, leaving the door open for perennial favourite Peter Wedge (New Brunswick; Kona), who finished a close second in Dieppe, New Brunswick in 2004 after an epic battle with Kabush.

Greg Reain (Ontario; Stevens Racing) will be a man to watch as well. Greg has been training and racing in Europe this fall with some of the best riders in the world, and has a good shot at capturing the 2005 champion’s jersey.

An outside pick is Nathan Chown (Ontario; St. Catherines Bike Club), the best-ranked Canadian in the UCI ranking so far in 2005; Mathieu Toulouse (Québec; Maxxis), a mountain bike national team member, will also be a threat.

Elite Women
On the women’s side, current National champion Wendy Simms (British Columbia; Kona) will try to defend her title but will face a strong opposition from Lyne Bessette (Québec; cyclocrossworld.com-Louis Garneau) who has so far won all the races she has entered this season. Bessette took a year off from road cycling in 2005 to concentrate on mountain bike and cyclocross events, and is currently ranked eighth on the UCI ranking.

U23 Men
A new National champion will be crowned in the Espoir (U23 men) category in 2005 as Christian Meier (New Brunswick; Symmetrics) will not be present at the event. Per Strom (Alberta; Bicisport) is the best-seeded rider in that group so far, followed by Mark Batty (Ontario; 3 ROX Racing) and Shaun Adamson (Alberta; United Cycle).

Junior Men
With Joël Dion-Poitras (Québec; Espoir de Laval) and Ian McAvity (New Brunswick; Darlings Island) now in the Elite men’s category, Mike Bidniak (Alberta; Juventus) will be the man to beat this weekend. Bidniak, who finished third in 2004, will have to look out for Garrett McLeod (Nova Scotia; Valley Stove and Cycle) and Tim Clarke (Newfoundland; Canary Cycles) who finish fourth and fifth respectively last year.

Six other title will be up for grabs in the Master A-B-C-D Men and the Master A and B Women; five challenge class events will also take place. Action starts at 9:00 a.m. this Saturday at Hardwood Hills Nordic ski centre.

Beaucoup D’action En Perspective Ce Week End Lors Du Championnat National De Cyclo-Cross

Plus de 150 coureurs (record) convergeront ce week end vers Hardwood Hills, Ontario, pour le championnat national de cyclo-cross. 10 titres officiels seront décernés dans différentes catégories. De plus, cet événement servira de sélection pour l’équipe nationale qui se rendra au championnat du monde les 28-29 janvier prochain à Zeddam au Pays-Bas.

Homme Elite
A moins d’une surprise de dernière minute, Geoff Kabush (BC, Maxxis) ne défendra pas son titre acquis l’an dernier, ce qui laissera la porte grande ouverte à Peter Wedge (NB, Kona), 2ème en 2004, qui avait livré une dure bataille à Kabush sur le parcours de Dieppe.

Greg Reain (ON, Stevens Racing) sera également à surveiller, lui qui s’est entraîné cette automne en Europe avec les meilleurs coureurs au monde en vu de s’emparer du maillot de champion national 2005.

Il ne faut pas oublier également Nathan Chown (ON, Ste-Catherines bike Club), meilleur canadien actuellement au classement UCI 2005 ainsi que Mathieu Toulouse (QC, Maxxis), membre de l’équipe national de vélo de montagne, qui pourraient également causer des surprises.

Femme Elite
Chez les femmes, la championne 2004 Wendy Simms (BC, kona) tentera de défendre son titre. Elle aura fort à faire puisque Lyne Bessette (QC, cyclocrossworld.com-Louis Garneau) sera de la partie. Lyne a gagné toute les courses à laquelle elle a participée depuis le début de la saison.

Bessette a pris une année sabbatique sur route pour se concentrer sur le vélo de montagne et le cyclo-cross. Elle est présentement 8ème au classement UCI.

Homme U23
Les jeunes élites seront à la recherche d’un nouveau champion puisque Christian Meir (NB, Symmetrics) ne devrait pas être présent à Hardwood Hills. Per Strom (AB, Bicisport) fait office de leader, suivi de Mark Batty (ON, 3 ROX Racing) et de Shaun Adamson (AB, United Cycle).

Homme Junior
Sans Joël Dion-Poitras (QC, Espoir de Laval) et Ian McAvity (NB, Darlings Island) maintenant chez les élites, Mike Bidniak (AB, Juventus) sera l’homme à battre ce week end. Le coureur qui a fini 3ème en 2004 devra se méfier de Garrett McLeod (NS, Valley Stove and Cycle) et Tim Clarke (NFL, Canary Cycles) qui ont terminé respectivement 4ème et 5ème l’an passé.

6 autres titres seront à l’enjeu dans les catégories Maître homme A-B-C-D et Maître femme A-B. 5 événements challenge seront également présentés. L’action débute à 9h00 ce samedi au centre national de ski de fond de Hardwood Hills.
