CCES Doping Control Statistics - July to September 2005

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) performed 1,081 doping control tests from July to September 2005. This number represents yet another record quarter for the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP).
Version 4.0 of the CADP was announced on August 15, and came into effect automatically on November 15, 2005. Three significant supporting documents were added to the program, on athlete whereabouts, competition testing, and public disclosure. The details of all revisions can be downloaded at www.cces.ca/pdfs/CCES-ADV-CADPv4-E.pdf.
The CCES was pleased to manage doping control for the XI FINA World Championships held in Montreal in July. This swimming, diving, synchro and water polo event brought the in-competition testing portion to 68% of total tests, an unusually high number. Approximately half of the tests carried out this quarter fell under the domestic doping control program (503 tests). The CCES provided testing for 14 international events held in Canada (450 tests), for the World Anti-Doping Agency (90 tests) and for international federations (7 tests). A further 31 tests were conducted under contract.
Five anti-doping rule violations were reported during this three-month period. Two violations, one for EPO (cyclist Chris Sheppard - Ed.) and one refusal, resulted in a two-year sanction. The remaining three were for cannabinoids and resulted in a sanction of a warning and reprimand and no period of ineligibility.
"The CCES continues to increase testing numbers quarter over quarter," said Jeremy Luke, General Manager of the CCES Anti-Doping Program. "Our testing program at the FINA World Championships this summer was well-reviewed by the World Anti-Doping Agency's Independent Observers, so we are looking forward to servicing other international events held in Canada."
The CCES is an independent, national, non-profit organization. Our mission, to promote ethical conduct in all aspects of sport in Canada, is carried out through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence, as well as through programs and partnerships with other organizations.
