Blizzard Bike Club Fort St. John, BC
January 1st, 2006
Ten riders rode their bikes for the 22nd annual New Year's Day Ride. They rode 14 kms in -10 degree temperatures from the A & W in Fort St. John out to the Old Hope road and the Gladysz's house.
The New Years Day Ride was started back in 1984 by Jim Peltier and Tim Ferris. It was a 'formal' event, back then, with tweed coats and road bikes mandatory. Cooler heads have prevailed, no pun intended, and warmer dress and mountain bikes have taken over.
Some years have been bitterly cold. The late 80's had a very short ride done in -39 C. conditions. Others have not been quite so cold but were also short. 1985 was so sunny and warm the riders went out for a 40-kilometer ride. The weather was glorious.
The Blizzards will be turbo training, indoors, until the weather improves for the first race in early March.
