Volunteers Needed

We are working with the social marketing program at Seneca College at York to develop 2 Communications Programs:

1. To encourage youth to start competitive cycling (bmx, mountain or road)
2. To encourage spectators to come out to watch bike races (an advertising kit for use by any club who wants to use them)

We need some volunteers to come and speak to the students on Thursday, March 16 between 10am and 12:30pm about what draws them to bike racing. In particular we'd like some cadets and juniors.

Please ask anyone willing to help to drop an email to cfagan@sympatico.ca.

Youth Discount for OCA Members

The OCA is happy to announce that it has won a grant from the Ministry of Health Promotion under the Sport for More program for the next three years. This grant is a joint effort between the Ministry of Health Promotion and the Government of Canada.

The most significant part of this grant involves a concentrated effort in developing grassroots cycling in Ontario through Sprockids. The second part of this grant involves a subsidy for youth cycling memberships. All under-19 OCA membership prices will be reduced as per the schedule below.

Through the OCA's 2005 Trillium foundation grant, all OCA memberships will be available on-line in mid-February. The two waiver forms will still have to me mailed in as mandated by our insurance company. Renewal applications will be mailed and we will continue to accept applications the 'old-fashion' way. To encourage members to register on-line, there will be an 'across-the-board' $5.00 discount available as long as registration is completed (including waiver forms received in OCA office) by March 24th, 2006. An additional $5.00 early bird discount applies to all 19+ UCI membership applications received by March 31st.

Over the next 6 weeks the Forest City Velodrome will be hosting 4 weekends of Racing.

The Can-Am-Que Challenge will see the top riders from all over the North East & Canada in a mid-winter series of races to see who has the fitness in winter. (Note: information posted yesterday - January 11/06 7:45 pm EST)

The second event is our Forest City Six-Day Team Race, 6 Teams racing for 6 nights of racing over 2 weekends.

Our third race effort is the North American Short Track Cycling Championships.

This event is to encourage racers as young as 10 years old to come to London and race against riders of their own ability. It will be a different style of racing as all sprint events will accumulate time for each event to determine the Champion. On Saturday night there will be a Sprint Tournament with only 8 riders qualifying for the elimination races.

In the Endurance events the points race will be raced in 8 different segments. There will be a 3k Time Trial and 5k scratch race. A 6 Team Madison will close the Championships.
